MULTI-ENGINE PISTON
CLASS RATING (MEP CR)

EXPAND YOUR AIRCRAFT CAPABILITY

The Multi-Engine Piston Class Rating develops the knowledge and flying skills required to operate single-pilot multi-engine piston aeroplanes safely, including normal multi-engine operations, engine-failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques.

OVERVIEW

STEP INTO
MULTI-ENGINE FLYING

The MEP class rating prepares pilots to operate multi-engine piston aeroplanes with confidence and discipline. Training combines aircraft systems knowledge, multi-engine performance and planning with practical handling, engine-failure recognition and asymmetric flight.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

FROM TWIN-ENGINE BASICS
TO ASYMMETRIC CONTROL

The course develops multi-engine competency progressively: systems and performance, normal handling, circuit operations, engine-failure recognition, asymmetric flight and final skill-test preparation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

BRING YOUR EXPERIENCE
TO MULTI-ENGINE TRAINING

The MEP class rating is intended for pilots who already have a solid single-engine foundation and sufficient command experience to progress into multi-engine operations.

CLASS RATING ENTRYWhat you need to begin
  • Hold an appropriate aeroplane pilot licence
  • Complete at least 70 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC) on aeroplanes
  • Meet applicable medical and licence-validity requirements
  • Meet the ATO/DTO admission and training-record requirements
  • Complete the required theoretical knowledge instruction and examination before the skill test
THEORY TRAINING

UNDERSTAND THE
MULTI-ENGINE ENVIRONMENT

The theoretical element develops the knowledge required to understand multi-engine systems, performance, planning and the aerodynamic and operational consequences of an engine failure.

THEORY TRAININGMinimum 7 hours

MULTI-ENGINE KNOWLEDGECore subject areas
  • Multi-engine aircraft systems
  • Engine and propeller systems
  • Performance and limitations
  • Mass and balance considerations
  • Engine-failure aerodynamics
  • Asymmetric flight principles
  • Operational planning and decision-making
  • Emergency and abnormal procedures
PRACTICAL TRAINING

CONTROL THE AIRCRAFT
IN NORMAL AND ASYMMETRIC FLIGHT

The practical course includes a minimum of 6 hours of dual flight instruction: at least 2 hours 30 minutes for normal multi-engine operations and at least 3 hours 30 minutes dedicated to engine-failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques.

DUAL FLIGHT TRAININGMinimum 6 hours

FLIGHT TRAININGMEP class-rating syllabus
  • Minimum 2 h 30 min dual instruction in normal single-pilot MEP operations
  • Minimum 3 h 30 min dual instruction in engine-failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques
  • Normal take-offs, circuits, approaches and landings
  • Engine-failure recognition and identification
  • Single-engine control, performance and decision-making
  • Abnormal and emergency procedures
  • Skill-test preparation and standardisation
CLASS PRIVILEGES

ADD MULTI-ENGINE
PISTON PRIVILEGES

A valid MEP (Land) class rating allows the holder to operate applicable single-pilot multi-engine piston land aeroplanes within the privileges, differences-training requirements and limitations of the class rating.

MEP (LAND) PRIVILEGESWhat the rating adds
  • Operate applicable single-pilot multi-engine piston land aeroplanes
  • Exercise privileges subject to rating validity and applicable recency requirements
  • Complete differences training where required between aircraft within the MEP class
  • Build multi-engine experience for professional and instrument-training pathways
  • Progress toward MEP IR and other advanced multi-engine qualifications
