MULTI-ENGINE
INSTRUMENT RATING (MEP IR)
The Multi-Engine Instrument Rating develops the knowledge, procedures and aircraft-control skills required to operate multi-engine aeroplanes under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), including asymmetric instrument flight and engine-out procedures.
MASTER IFR IN A
MULTI-ENGINE ENVIRONMENT
The MEP IR(A) course trains pilots to operate multi-engine aeroplanes safely under IFR and in IMC. Training combines advanced instrument procedures with the additional workload, performance considerations and asymmetric-flight demands of multi-engine aircraft.

150 hours
55 hours
Multi-engine IFR demands precision, workload management and sound asymmetric decision-making.
FROM IFR PROCEDURES
TO ASYMMETRIC INSTRUMENT FLIGHT
The course develops instrument proficiency progressively from basic and procedural IFR skills to multi-engine approaches, engine-out instrument flight, abnormal procedures and final skill-test preparation.
FROM PROCEDURAL IFR TO MULTI-ENGINE IR SKILL TEST
Training builds from instrument procedures and navigation to asymmetric instrument operations, approaches and examiner-ready proficiency.

BUILD ON YOUR
MULTI-ENGINE EXPERIENCE
Applicants enter the modular MEP IR(A) route as holders of a PPL(A) or CPL(A). The ATO must ensure that applicants who do not already hold a multi-engine class or type rating complete the required multi-engine training before beginning the MEP IR flight phase.
- Hold a PPL(A) or CPL(A)
- Complete at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as PIC, including at least 10 hours in aeroplanes
- Hold night privileges if IR privileges will be exercised at night
- Hold a multi-engine class/type rating or complete the required multi-engine training before MEP IR flight training
- Meet ATO admission, medical and training-record requirements
KNOWLEDGE FOR
ADVANCED IFR OPERATIONS
The IR theoretical knowledge course develops the regulatory, meteorological, navigation, instrumentation and operational understanding required to plan and conduct IFR operations safely.
- Air Law
- Aircraft General Knowledge — Instrumentation
- Flight Planning and Monitoring
- Human Performance
- Meteorology
- Radio Navigation
- Communications
- IFR operational application and examination preparation
PRECISION UNDER IFR.
CONTROL UNDER ASYMMETRY.
The classical modular multi-engine IR(A) course includes a minimum of 55 hours of instrument time under instruction. The remaining aeroplane instrument instruction must include at least 15 hours in multi-engine aeroplanes.
- Minimum 55 hours instrument time under instruction
- Up to 25 hours may be instrument ground time in an FNPT I
- Up to 40 hours may be completed in an FFS or FNPT II
- Remaining instrument flight instruction includes at least 15 hours in multi-engine aeroplanes
- IFR departures, arrivals, holding, en-route procedures and instrument approaches
- One-engine-inoperative instrument flight and asymmetric procedures
- Missed approaches, abnormal procedures and skill-test preparation
OPERATE MULTI-ENGINE
AEROPLANES UNDER IFR
A valid multi-engine IR(A), used together with the applicable class or type rating, allows the holder to conduct multi-engine aeroplane operations under IFR and in IMC within the privileges and limitations of the ratings held.
- Operate appropriately rated multi-engine aeroplanes under IFR
- Conduct IFR departures, en-route operations, arrivals and instrument approaches
- Operate in IMC within applicable licence, class/type and IR limitations
- Apply multi-engine instrument procedures including asymmetric operations
- Use the rating as a key qualification for advanced commercial and airline pathways
MOVE TOWARD
PROFESSIONAL OPERATIONS
MEP IR(A) combines multi-engine capability with full instrument privileges and forms a major building block for commercial and airline-oriented pilot progression.
UPGRADE TO
MULTI-ENGINE IR
Holders of a single-engine IR(A) who also hold a multi-engine class or type rating can follow a significantly reduced route for their first multi-engine IR(A).
SEP IR(A) + MULTI-ENGINE CLASS/TYPE RATINGMinimum 5 hours multi-engine instrument instructionUp to 3 hours may be completed in an FFS or FNPT II, followed by the required multi-engine IR(A) skill test.
MULTI-ENGINE IFR
PRECISION WITH MORE COMPLEXITY.
Develop the discipline to manage IFR procedures, aircraft performance and asymmetric workload in a multi-engine environment.
FLY THE PROCEDURE.
MANAGE THE AIRCRAFT.
MEP IR training brings instrument precision and multi-engine decision-making together, preparing pilots for increasingly complex professional operations.
